The EMS Library
Most of the collections belonging to the Society are held in the Noreen and Kenneth Murray Library at the University of Edinburgh and are recorded as such in the Edinburgh University Library catalogue. Some older books and journals are housed at the Collaborative Academic Store for Scotland (CASS), which is located in the Causewayside Building of the National Library of Scotland. The Society's principal collection consists mainly of periodicals obtained by exchange with other learned societies throughout the world; at present about 150 periodical titles are received. Members may consult or borrow books from the Society's Library, and are also entitled to use Edinburgh University Library; in return, members of Edinburgh University Library may use the Society's Library.
EMS members' access is as borrowers but involves no access to online resources. Members need some Society ID as requested in the information page. To see what registration with the Library brings for EMS members [no access to online subscriptions] please visit the following page.
Opening hours are listed here. DiscoverEd can be searched from off-campus by non-members to find whether particular books are in stock and which library they should be at. However, now that there are no journal runs at KB, EMS visitors are strongly advised to telephone Murray Library Helpdesk staff before they set off. Doing so means they will know whether what they want to read is going to be available to them when they want to come. [Telephone: 0131 650 5784]. All print journals are, at best, half a day away from the Murray Library, in the Library Annexe, which can be visited but only by arrangement. With prior warning, Murray Library Helpdesk staff will be able to arrange to have a few volumes (not entire runs) sent to the Murray Library.
